Triple Crown Flashback: Perfection Eludes Native Dancer by a Head by Lee Lane-Edgar
Though the racing public didn’t know it at the time, the head loss that Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt’s Native Dancer suffered in the 1953 Kentucky Derby might be attributable to what many judged to be a bad trip and put the only blemish on what might have been a perfect 22 race career.
The horse, a handsome gray son of Polynesian nicknamed The Gray Ghost, was named the Eclipse two year old champion, winning all nine of his starts, and his admirers had high hopes for the 1953 Triple Crown.
After he made easy work of the Gotham and the Wood Memorial to start his two year old campaign, the excitement of an undefeated super horse winning the Kentucky Derby began to build, and he entered the 1953 Kentucky Derby as the heavy 7-10 favorite. In a field of only 11 (a size unheard of today), he was a true standout.
Unfortunately, he encountered trouble during the course of the race, and was destined to come up short to a 25-1 long shot named Dark Star, whom he had faced the prior year in September of 1952 in the Belmont Futurity, that one having come no closer than six lengths to Native Dancer. Dark Star had won three of six starts at age 2, but had not done anything of note until he won the Derby trial, just four days before the Kentucky Derby.
The official chart indicated that Native Dancer was roughed at the first turn. What actually happened is that a long shot named Money Broker bumped him, and according to the trainer, the jockey Eric Guerin panicked and eased him back to secure racing room. This maneuver, which many judged to be ill-advised, likely cost Native Dancer the race as he finished strongly only to come up short by a head.
He easily won the Withers stakes two weeks after the Derby, and went on to take both the Preakness and Belmont stakes. His subsequent wins made his heart-breaking Kentucky Derby loss all the more regrettable in retrospect, as he would have become racing’s ninth Triple Crown winner.
He would never lose after the Kentucky Derby. During the summer of 1953, he took the Dwyer, Arlington Classic, the Travers, and the American Derby. As a four year old, he made three starts, and won each contest, including a spectacular win in the Met Mile, which earned him Horse of the Year honors for 1954.
He finished his career with 21 wins and one second place finish. Bloodhorse ranked him as the seventh greatest U.S. racehorse of the 20th century.
