When you sit down at a piano for the first time, you'll probably feel a mixture of emotions. You will no doubt be thrilled to be poised over the keyboard ready to start playing all your favorite pieces of music. On the other hand, you may be wondering whether you can teach yourself to play, or whether you at least need a few simple piano lessons to get you going.
This article looks at eleven easy-to-learn tips on the basics.
MIDDLE C & THE C MAJOR SCALE
If your piano is a standard length, you will see 88 keys split between white and black keys, the black ones being arranged in alternate groups of two and three.
The first thing you need to do is locate Middle C. This is the white note to the left of the two black notes at the very centre of the keyboard. Place your right thumb on this note. Next, place your second finger on the white note next to it. Put your third finger on the next white note and tuck your thumb underneath your hand to play the note next to that. Then play each of the next five notes going from your thumb to your little finger - all white notes.
Congratulations ... you've just played your first scale, the scale of C Major.
Let's just recap. You played eight notes in all. The first was C, followed by D, E, F & G. The note you played after G was A, then B and, finally, another C one octave higher than the first. So the C Major scale consists of 8 notes, as follows:
C - D - E - F - G - A - B - C
From this simple lesson we can draw several conclusions:
"Each scale consists of 8 notes
"Musical notes only use 8 letters of the alphabet, from A to G
"The C Major scale can be played from any C note on the keyboard, whether played by the left or right hand, and will always consist of white keys only
OTHER MAJOR SCALES
Any note on the keyboard marks the start of a scale, but, unlike C Major, every other scale includes a number of black notes too.
For example, G Major, starting on any G note on the piano, is played in the same manner in which you played C Major, until you come to the F note. Then, instead of playing the white F note, you play the black note above it, F# (sharp), before ending the scale on the G white note.
So this is the course taken by the G Major scale:
G - A - B - C - D - E - F# - G
Now, if you play the C Major scale, followed by the G Major scale, although the notes are different, the overall shape of the sound is identical. Can you hear it?
From this simple lesson we can draw the following conclusions:
"Any note marks the beginning of a scale
"All the other Major scales contain different combinations of white and black notes
"Black notes are called sharps and flats
"Although each scale consists of a different combination of white and black notes, they are all characterised by an identical 'sound shape'
CHORDS
Once you know your scales, you can begin to identify chords. A chord is a combination of notes played together. Chords can be used in any combination to add light and shade, and any number of other effects, to melodies.
The most basic chord is known as the 'root' chord. To find the root chord of C Major, go to middle C again, then find the third note (E) and the fifth note (G). Play all three notes together. To make the sound more interesting, these notes can be played in any combination, so you can play the chord with the E on the bottom and the C on the top, or with the G on the bottom and the E on the top. These are known as inversions of the root chord and you can play the notes in these combinations in any key.
So the chord of C Major can be played as follows:
C - E - G
E - G - C
G - C - E
From this simple lesson we can draw the following conclusions:
"The root chord of any scale consists of the first, third and fifth notes
"These three notes can be played in any combination
"Combination 3 - 5 - 1 is known as a first inversion
"Combination 5 - 1 - 3 is known as a second inverssion
CONCLUSION
